Facility

The Shull Wollan Center is located on the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) site at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A purpose-built facility funded by the State of Tennessee, the center contains conference and office space to support workshops, lectures, and temporary workspaces for visiting scientists, postdocs, and students. The center also contains 8 laboratory facilities which are available for use by all SWC visitors and affiliates.

Shull Wollan Center Laboratories

equipped for preparing and characterizing soft and biomaterials prior to neutron experimentation; the capabilities offered by the BCL are, for the most part, not found in other parts of ORNL and also serve as a hub for long-term scientific collaborations with external users. Equipment housed in these labs: Gas Chrom/Mass Spec (GC/MS), Dynamic/Static Light Scattering, UV-Vis-NIR, Density Meter, LB Trough, High Speed Centrifuge, Ultra-Centrifuge, DSC and ITC, Steady State and Lifetime Spectrofluorometer, Zeta Pals

a key facility to further high-pressure neutron research at ORNL; it is a one of a kind laboratory that enables, diamond anvil cell preparation, in situ high pressure measurements with Raman spectroscopy and in situ laser heating; these resources are used in collaboration with neutron users for complementary measurements to go along in situ neutron pressure measurements; the laboratory will also be used to educate students; for example, prior to COVID-19, a project had been approved that would have seen a GEM fellow spend their summer internship predominantly conducting experiments in this laboratory. Equipment housed in this lab: Multiple Lasers of All Power Levels (ranging from Blue to IR Radiation), Several High-Power Microscopes and Diamond Anvil Cells, EDM Driller, Laser-Driller, Diamond Saw
